The Great Pumpkin Experiment: Stretch It, Mix It, Make It Erupt

Celebrate fall with two hands-on pumpkin experiments! Makers will create stretchy, squishy pumpkin slime using pumpkin seeds and gooey pumpkin insides, mixing science with plenty of sensory fun. Then, they’ll turn real pumpkins into bubbling, fizzing volcanoes as they explore chemical reactions in action. It’s a delightfully messy way to experiment, create and discover with pumpkins!

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Engineering Design Challenge
Saturday, November 21 | 10 AM - Noon
Get ready to dream big and build your own parade creation! Inspired by the beloved book Balloons Over Broadway, young engineers will design, construct and test their own floating balloons or parade floats using everyday materials. Along the way, they'll experiment with air, weight and balance while discovering the science behind those larger-than-life parade balloons. Through creative challenges and hands-on problem-solving, kids will bring their imaginative designs to life in this festive Thanksgiving STEM workshop!

Intro to Maker City
December 5 | 10 AM - Noon
Interested in Maker City but not sure how to get started? These introductory sessions are perfect for youth who are just turning 8 or have never participated in Maker City. Participants will receive a tour, try some guided activities, and then have free time to explore and create.
Introductory workshops are FREE with membership or paid admission. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Gingerneering Challenge!
Saturday, December 19 | 10 AM - Noon
Put your engineering skills to the test with a sweet holiday challenge! Using gingerbread pieces, toothpicks and icing, makers will design and construct their own gingerbread structures. But will their creations stand strong when the winds start blowing? We'll put each design to the test with a simulated windstorm, exploring the science of structural stability along the way. Get ready to build, experiment and discover what it takes to make a gingerbread masterpiece that can weather the storm!

REGISTRATION INFORMATION:
Workshops are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please call the museum if you would like to check on class status. You may complete the registration form and waiver online. Payment must be received by Explore More to secure a space in the class. We are only able to accept credit card payments in person and through online registration. We regret that we are unable to accept credit card payment over the phone and cannot hold spots, for any length of time, while waiting for a payment to arrive. In the event that minimum enrollments are not met, we reserve the right to cancel or reschedule classes. If this occurs, your entire fee will be refunded. There are no refunds for classes dropped less than 10 business days before class begins. A 50% refund will be issued if the museum is notified in writing at least 10 business days before class starts.
PHOTO WAIVER:
Explore More Discovery Museum reserves the right to use photos taken during classes and workshops for use in marketing. If you do not wish to have your child’s photo used for the museum’s purposes, please submit a request in writing with your registration form.
PICK UP/DROP OFF:
Please check in with your child at the front desk at 150 South Main Street in downtown Harrisonburg no more than 10 minutes before the class begins. The museum asks that each child be signed in at the beginning of class and signed out at the end. If someone other than the child’s parent or guardian is picking the child up from class, please notify the museum.
