What is a children's museum?
A children's museum provides educational exhibits and programs to promote learning through play and exploration. The exhibits at Explore More reflect our local community and are designed for children to explore independently with their families.
When is the museum open?
Tuesday - Saturday 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM.
*Note: Museum hours may change seasonally and there are a few occasions throughout the year when the museum is open or closed for special events. The website offers the most up-to-date information, so please check before heading out.
How much does admission to the museum cost?
Admission is $7 per person for adults and children. There is no charge for children under one.
How is the Explore More Discovery Museum funded?
Explore More is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. 40% of the annual operating budget comes from fundraising events, sponsorships and donations while the other 60% is from admission fees, memberships, program fees, etc.
Why do adults have to pay admission?
We encourage families to play and interact together in our museum and share their experience. This is a great opportunity for parents to engage with their children, explore their child's interests, and have fun! As a community-funded, nonprofit organization, we depend on admission pricing to offer high quality exhibits and programs. We strive to keep our admission as low as possible for our visitors and currently offer the lowest admission price of any children's museum in Virginia!
Does the museum ever have free admission?
The first Friday of each month (except December) is open with no admission fee for all visitors from 4:00 until 7:00 PM. Thanks to our generous sponsors from the Harrisonburg Kiwanis Club for making this program possible.
Do you participate in the Museums for All program?
Yes, we are pleased to participate in this program. Admission fee is $2.00 per person for families with SNAP EBT cards and valid ID.
Can I drop my child off at the museum?
Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times except if they are participating in a preregistered program, workshop or summer camp.
Is the Explore More Discovery Museum part of the ACM reciprocal network?
Yes! Visitors who have an ACM level membership to a participating children's museum will receive 50% off the admission price for up to six (6) people including the cardholder when presenting a current membership card with the ACM logo. Explore More is NOT part of the ASTC network.
Where can I park?
While Explore More doesn't have its own parking, there is free public parking close by for patrons of downtown businesses. See map to right for locations.
How long does it typically take to go through the museum?
While this varies by age and interest area, on average, families typically spend 1.5 - 2 hours at the museum. Admission is good all day, so visitors are welcome to stay as long as they would like and even leave and come back during the same day.
Can I bring a stroller?
We do allow strollers in the museum exhibit areas, but we also have stroller parking in the coat rack area if you would prefer to leave the stroller while playing in the museum.
Can I bring in lunch?
Sure! Visitors are welcome to bring in lunch or snacks. We ask that all food and drinks are consumed in the indoor picnic table area located in the Great Outdoors exhibit toward the back of the museum.
If I've paid admission and need to leave, can I come back the same day?
Admission to Explore More is good for the whole day. You are welcome to leave and come back throughout the day - just hang on to your receipt!
I purchased an annual membership. Can I bring someone else in place of one of the members?
With a One Plus One, Family, or Explorer membership, adults may be substituted (1 at a time for One Plus One, 2 at a time for Family, 3 at a time for Explorer), but only the children listed on the membership may come in on the membership. There is no substitution of adults with a Grandparent membership.
