In the beginning

A TRAVELING MUSEUM
In 2002, a group of citizens banded together to establish a hands-on museum for its children. Launched as a traveling museum, volunteers pooled their talents and collaborated with the community to create interactive exhibits presented at a variety of locations. They encouraged families to hopscotch from place to place to discover "Where in the World is the Harrisonburg Children's Museum" while also exploring science, arts, engineering and more.

FIRST DOWNTOWN LOCATION
In October 2003, the Harrisonburg Children's Museum became a permanent downtown location. Operating at 30 N. Main Street for seven years, the museum became a popular family destination with an average of 30,000 - 35,000 annual visitors. We greatly enjoyed our time in the 6,000 square foot rental space (now a parking lot!) but had big dreams for a larger, regional museum.

NEW ADDRESS + NEW NAME
In November 2010, the museum moved to a permanent location at 150 S. Main Street and officially changed our name to Explore More Discovery Museum. The first exhibit to be moved into place was a full-size ambulance donated by Gordon and Wanda Driver. We created quite a sight as we used a skid loader to move the vehicle inside the front doors.

This exhibit was just one of 12 exhibits that children could explore on opening day. See all the interactive exhibits here.

TIME TO CLIMB

EXPANSION PLANS
We have a BIG vision for the future. While we currently occupy one floor of our 150 S. Main Street location, it is our goal to realize the full potential of our 3-story, 33,000 square foot facility and to unlock the opportunity that exists within those walls...opportunity to create, to climb and to soar! With two upper floors available and ready for build-out, we are eager to start the climb. Find out more about the expansion vision and how you can join in.
