Recipe for Fun!

Minimize

Cooking international recipes is a great way to get your kids involved and learn about other cultures throughout the world. Make it a family tradition and have an International night each month. You can dress up for the occasion, create ethnic food and take a trip without leaving your house.  

Try this delicious and kid-friendly Mexican dessert!

Churros
1/2 Cup water
2 Tablespoons butter or margarine
pinch of sugar
6 Tablespoons flour
l egg yolk
2 whole eggs
Oil for frying
Powdered sugar
In saucepan heat water, butter and sugar until butter has melted and sugar is dissolved. Add flour and blend together. Turn heat to low and cook continuing to stir until mixture forms a ball. It will be dry enough to leave the pan clean. In a small bowl whisk together eggs and egg yolk. Take off heat and slowly stirring in beaten eggs. Allow to cool and then place in a ziploc bag or pastry bag. (Clip a hole at the corner if using a ziploc bag). Squeeze dough out into long sticks. Fry in hot oil until golden brown and crisp. Place on paper towel to drain. Then sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Extend the experience:

Find Mexico on the map and discuss the location, climate and natural resources.
Learn some simple Spanish phrases.
Discuss customs and traditions unique to Mexico and compare similarities and differences with your own family traditions.

DANCE - Put on some salsa music or some traditional Chinese lullabies and dance the day away.  Try Multicultural Children's Songs by Ella Jenkins (available at the Massanutten Regional Library).  

WRITE -Find a friend from another country and become a Pen Pal.  This is an easy way to learn what day to day life is like in another culture. You can visit http://www.surfnetkids.com/penpals.htm for a list of sites that offer free pen pal exchanges.
